Liam Payne Inquest Adjourned as Coroner Awaits Argentina Evidence
Liam Payne’s inquest was adjourned until December 1 as a British coroner told a pre-inquest review hearing on Thursday that he is still awaiting evidence from Argentina. Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said no further disclosure had been received from Argentine authorities via the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office since January 2025. The former One Direction star died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
Why the Liam Payne Inquest Adjourned Again
Butler told Beaconsfield Coroner’s Court that documents received before Thursday’s hearing had undergone a process of translation. He said he would share the relevant documents with Payne’s family, who did not attend the hearing. “We have had no further disclosure of evidence from Argentina,” Butler said.
The Liam Payne inquest was adjourned for a further pre-inquest review, which comes as the investigation in Argentina continues. In February 2025, a court in Buenos Aires dropped charges of criminal negligence against three of the five people who had been charged in connection with Payne’s death. The remaining proceedings have not concluded.
A post-mortem examination found Payne died of multiple traumas and “internal and external haemorrhage” after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel. The coroner said he understood investigations were continuing in Argentina.
The Investigation Timeline as Liam Payne Inquest Adjourned
Payne rose to fame as a member of One Direction, one of the best-selling boy bands in history. After the group began an indefinite hiatus in 2016, he launched a successful solo career, releasing his debut album, LP1, in December 2019. He grew up in Bushbury, Wolverhampton.
The legal proceedings following his death now span two countries. The Argentine legal system continues to investigate the circumstances of the fall and whether any individuals bear criminal responsibility. The British coronial system cannot complete its inquest until it receives evidence from that investigation.
The Liam Payne inquest adjourned with no date set for a final hearing. Butler said he would continue to seek full reports and eyewitness statements. The diplomatic channel between the Foreign Office and Argentine authorities has produced no new disclosures since the January 2025 review hearing.
What Does the Liam Payne Inquest Adjournment Mean for the Family
Payne’s family did not attend Thursday’s hearing at the Beaconsfield court. Butler confirmed he would share the translated documents with them. The family will have access to evidence that cannot yet be made public. They will await the next review on December 1 alongside the public.
The gap between the legal process and public grief remains wide. The Argentine investigation continues. The British inquest awaits evidence it cannot compel. The December review may produce a date for the final inquest or another adjournment.
