Nvidia Unveils RTX Spark AI Chip for Personal Computers

Nvidia unveils RTX Spark AI chip for personal computers as chief executive Jensen Huang announced the new processor during a keynote speech ahead of the Computex technology show in Taipei on Monday. The RTX Spark is designed to run AI agents locally on Windows PCs and will be included in new machines from Lenovo, HP, Dell, Microsoft Surface, Asus, and MSI, with launches in the autumn. Huang described the launch as a reinvention of the computer comparable to the shift from phones to smartphones. The announcement came one day after the US Commerce Department tightened export controls on Nvidia’s most advanced chips to Chinese firms, closing a loophole that had allowed subsidiaries of Chinese companies based outside China to access the technology without a license.

What Is the RTX Spark?

The RTX Spark is “a new superchip… for the era of personal AI agents — offering a new class of computer that moves from tool to teammate,” Nvidia said on its website Nvidia RTX Spark product page, 1 June 2026.

The chip will power a new line of Windows PCs manufactured by Lenovo, HP, Dell, Microsoft Surface, Asus, and MSI, with models from Acer and Gigabyte to follow. The first devices are expected in the autumn.

Microsoft chairman and chief executive Satya Nadella appeared alongside Huang to endorse the chip. “Our goal is to deliver unmetered intelligence to every home and every desk with Windows,” Nadella said. “RTX Spark marks a real breakthrough towards that vision” Microsoft statement, 1 June 2026.

NVIDIA has traditionally focused on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) — specialised chips originally designed for video game graphics that are now widely used to power artificial intelligence systems. The data centre boom in AI training made Nvidia the world’s most valuable company, with a stock market valuation of more than $5 trillion (£3.7 trillion).

The Strategic Shift

Charlie Dai, vice president and principal analyst at technology research firm Forrester, said the announcement showed Nvidia making a “paradigm shift” from “component supplier” to “architecture owner in the PC market” Forrester Research analysis, 1 June 2026.

“This will directly challenge Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm and raise competitive pressure on performance, efficiency, and AI integration,” Dai said.

Semiconductor analyst Dr Ian Cutress said by offering a Windows notebook with Nvidia hardware inside, the company was giving developers, particularly those working with AI, “a reason to stay within its own software and hardware orbit.” NVIDIA’s CUDA software platform has been the invisible advantage behind its data centre dominance. The RTX Spark extends that logic to the personal computer.

Ian Fogg, Research Director at industry analyst firm FDM CCS Insight, said the change was “likely to come with a significant price tag” and Nvidia would be targeting “those looking for workstation-class performance” FDM CCS Insight analysis, 1 June 2026.

Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Apple accounted for almost 75% of the world’s PC market in the first three months of this year, according to research firm Gartner. With Apple excluded from the Windows partnership, Nvidia’s alliance with Microsoft and the major PC manufacturers positions the RTX Spark across the majority of the remaining market.

The Export Controls

On Sunday, the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security published guidance clarifying that a licence is required to export the most advanced AI chips — including Nvidia’s Blackwell processors — to subsidiaries of Chinese companies based outside China.

The timing — one day before Huang’s Computex keynote — was significant. The US government is tightening containment of China’s AI capabilities as Nvidia expands its consumer reach in Western markets.

The two moves are complementary: export controls limit the supply of advanced chips to Chinese firms, while the PC push expands the supply of advanced chips to Western consumers. The combination shifts Nvidia’s revenue mix toward markets with lower regulatory risk.

The risk is that China retaliates by accelerating its own domestic chip development, potentially shutting Nvidia out of whatever remains of the Chinese market.

What is the Nvidia RTX Spark?

The RTX Spark is a new AI chip designed for personal computers. NVIDIA says it enables “personal AI agents” and represents a new class of computer that “moves from tool to teammate.”

Which PC makers will use the RTX Spark?

Lenovo, HP, Dell, Microsoft Surface, Asus, and MSI will include the chip in new Windows PCs available from the autumn. Acer and Gigabyte will follow.

How much will RTX Spark PCs cost?

NVIDIA has not announced pricing, but analysts expect the chip to come with “a significant price tag” aimed at professionals and developers seeking workstation-class performance.

Why did the US tighten export controls on Nvidia chips?

The US Commerce Department closed a loophole that allowed Chinese companies to access advanced AI chips through subsidiaries based outside China. Licences are now required for such exports.

Is Nvidia competing with Intel and AMD?

Yes. The RTX Spark puts Nvidia in direct competition with Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm in the PC processor market. Analysts describe it as a “paradigm shift” from component supplier to architecture owner.
