Truist Championship: Matt McCarty Leads After First Round at Quail Hollow

American Matt McCarty shot an eight-under-par 63 to take the first-round lead at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday. The world number 45 made a combined 220 feet of putts, the most in a single round on the PGA Tour this season. Play was suspended due to inclement weather, with 20 of the 72 players yet to finish their rounds.

McCarty’s Putting Performance

McCarty birdied his final three holes to post his 63. The 220 feet of made putts represents the cumulative distance of every successful putt during the round. He finished one shot ahead of South Korea’s Sungjae Im, who has one hole remaining to complete his first round.

Five players are tied for third at five under par: Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan, England’s Harry Hall, Canada’s Nick Taylor, Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard, and Austria’s Sepp Straka. England’s Tommy Fleetwood, whose round included an eagle on the 10th hole, and Alex Fitzpatrick are at four under after rounds of 67.

McIlroy’s Opening Round

Rory McIlroy, the world number two playing his first round since retaining his Masters title, opened with a one-under-par 70. The Northern Irishman, a record four-time winner of this event, made 17 consecutive pars before closing with a birdie on the 18th hole.

The no-cut tournament is the final event before the US PGA Championship, which takes place at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania from 14 to 17 May.
